" Mambo Cafe's Movie Review "

" Mambo Cafe " the Puerto Rican film director Reuben Gonzalez, who wrote and directed "Mambo Cafe", the film where debutant Thalia, explains that this one is a romantic comedy in the style of Moonstruck, the film that outside hit back in 1987 and by which Cher gained an Oscar like better actress. " Mambo Cafe " is the efforts to survive of a Puerto Rican family who is in the Latin Harlem. Frank and Carmen, the main personages, are interpreted by Rosana de Soto and Paul Rodriguez. They represent a pair that works very hard and that bases its dreams of success on the familiar restaurant. Her Nydia daughter (Thalia), on the other hand, is studying in an expensive Bostonian, ignorante school of the great economic sacrifices by which are passing her parents, nor who they perhaps cannot continue paying her studies too.

For Thalia this film represents a true challenge. Debut in the cinema, an average one until now unexplored by her is not only his, but also its first attempt to crossover, since the film is in English. But although it is certain that it does not have cinematographic experience and shares honors with experienced actors, also is truth that contributes the most famous name of all the billboard. As far as how one feels,Thalia says she's happy for having been able to do what she likes, and that it enchanted the script to her." When I read the script, I liked it and I believed in him... I found simpaticon well. Here the Latins are not classified, as he happens almost always. They are not drug addicts, gang members, nor delinquent... the other way around. This film is on a family united with good values. It is a comedy".

And...Who are Thalia's idols? Surprising, the favorite artists of Thalia are not those that one hopes. " he enchants Arnold Schwarzenegger, by his physicist and because it is a classic example that one can in fact turn dreams into this country".

" THE T.V RATING GAMES IN P.I"

Now that the much awaited latest Thalia telenovela "Rosalinda" has landed on Philippine television, which is housed at ABS-CBN 2, the biggest local T.V. network, and now Thalia's new network residence, another new and expectedly higher wave of ratings game has surfaced. This is so, since the said telenovela, stars no other than the Queen of Telenovelas, Thalia.ABS-CBN's closest t.v. network rival GMA-7 currently seems to be feeling the tremor of what "Rosalinda" is causing as these early signs of her eruption. As a natural tendency to defend its' position, GMA 7 is now retaliating quite a bit by extensively promoting their 2 cartoon offerings being shown simultaneously as "Rosalinda" alternately on weeknights at 7:00 p.m.. The character of Dragon Ball Z was being made to utter these intriguing war of words "tatapusing ko na ang mahabang laban na ito" in English "I will end this long fight now." and the network's battle cry to the viewing public that these two men in red, ( which the two cartoon characters were wearing,"Dragon Ball Z and Lupin III)be "PROTECTING YOU FROM THE SCUM OF MEXICO".Let's see how this fight will end. Will Thalia beat the 2 loved cartoon characters in the ratings game like what she did before twice, one in 1996 and the other in 1997 but as humans as her competitors in contrast to the cartoon characters now? Will the cartoon heroes' power outshine Thalia power? The choice is ours.

"Dancer Meche Barba Dies at 77 "

MEXICO CITY (AP) - Meche Barba, a circus performer's daughter whose smoldering beauty brought her fame as a dancer in Mexican films, has died. She was 77.

Barba died in Mexico City on Friday of pulmonary emphysema. She had been hospitalized since Dec. 30, Mexico City newspapers reported.

Mercedes Barba Feito was born on Sept. 24, 1922, in New York, where her Spanish-born father, Antonio, had been performing with a circus.

Barba and her sister Carmen began performing as children to help support the family when their father fell ill. Appearances on Mexico's premier theater stages led to roles in film starting in 1937.

Though Barba once insisted she wasn't pretty enough to be a film star, she won acclaim for her beauty and her acting presence. During Mexico's "Golden Age'' of cinema, she was cast beside stars such as singer Jorge Negrete and German Valdes, the comic actor better known as Tin Tan.

She came to be known as "the queen of the rumba,'' for her sensuous dancing in more than 50 films.

In the 1980s, Barba began appearing in Mexican soap operas, often being cast as a housekeeper. Her final performance came in 1999 in the series ``Rosalinda,'' starring singer-actress-dancer Thalia.

Barba's remains were cremated Friday and interred in Mexico City's Spanish Pantheon. She is survived by her son, Fernando Fernandez, and four grandchildren.

"Predictable melodramatic touches in Thalia's latest TV soap "

A FEW years ago, Thalia was the most sensational star on local TV screens, thanks to her hit Mexican telenovelas. Her personal appearances in the country were also big hits.

Later, people kept tabs of Thalia's show biz activities abroad, her dates with some famous men, her romance with a top entertainment mogul, etc.

But there's nothing like seeing her on the TV screen again in another telenovela, so Thalia's new soap, "Rosalinda" (weekday evenings on Channel 2) is just what the ratings doctor ordered for the year 2000.

Before Thalia's character made her appearance on the new telenovela, viewers were informed that her mother bore her out of wedlock--and in prison, yet. It seems like the "martyr" character assumed her man's guilt in a murder case due to her great love for him, so her baby was born behind bars.

Later, her mother gave her to a good friend who brought her up as her own. At 20, Rosalinda (now played by Thalia) is presented to us as a lovely, lively young woman who works in a flower shop and likes wearing "signature" rose behind one of her ears (Ole!).

One day, she meets a handsome young man and they're instantly drawn to one another. Little does Rosalinda know that her beau is the son of the man her real mother was accused of killing, and that her new boyfriend's mother has vowed to get back at all the members of Rosalinda's real family. Another complication that could be developed in future episodes is the characterization of Rosalinda's adoptive brother as a shifless bum.

As you can see, Thalia's latest soap is loaded with cliche characterizations and situations. But these predictable melodramatic touches are popular with viewers who regard TV soaps as familiar and momentarily-filling junk food that even slow-witted people can follow, so "Rosalinda" should find a warm welcome in many local TV home.

One would hope, however, that some viewers opt for more logical, fresher and less escapist viewing fare.

It's ironic that the new millennium is already here with its stunning high-tech innovations, and yet, when it comes to style and content, we continue to lap up romantic-melodramatic soap material that looks and feels like it was produced in 1955!

It's high time that it's brought up to date, don't you think?

Enough of "martyr" women who give up their future simply to protect the men they love, of babies born in prison, of long-seething family feuds that end violently, of lovely leading ladies who are putty in dashing men's hands. Time to face up to life as it really is--and grow up.
